By Jodi Endicott

Commissioned by the State Foundation of Culture and the Arts for Makalapa Elementary School

Hand-built, life size concrete and mixed media sculptures

To be completed in spring of 2004

Jodi Endicott is currently working on an installation of three life size figures that depict how students are educated at Makalapa Elementary School. Titled "The Way We Learn", this work includes a Hawaiian teacher being read to by a 6th grade boy. Although he is the one reading to her, they are working together. The teacher provides the support and the book provides the knowledge as the boy is taking the initiative. In front of them a kindergartner is using her critical thinking skills to piece together a puzzle. She too is working independently to solve this problem.

The sculptures are being created using a stainless steel rod and mesh armature layered by hand with concrete. The surface will contain other materials including cast bronze and ceramics.
