PROCESS

The paintings of Jodi Endicott are truly sculptural works. From the very start she imagines painting the figure as if she were creating a sculpture. Endicott forms the armature on canvas and then adds layers and layers of a variety of materials to develop her rich three-dimensional surfaces.

"My paintings are as much about the process as the materials I work with. These are very tough canvases as the paint has been layered, removed, marked, then burnished and layered again to get the effect I am looking for. I work it like a sculpture on a 2-dimensional plane. I am fortunate to be able to use so many different combinations of media to create such depth in the surface."

Aesthetically, these works are about line, surface and movement. Some works are drawn and painted. Another was the result of muscling paint onto a canvas to make it flow like water.
